Tennis teams look toward a busy season

At this time of the year, tennis is probably the farthest thing from most people’s minds. But the South Dakota State University men’s and women’s tennis team have been hard at work for over a month getting ready for their season. The Jacks have already played two matches, and while they do count in the standings, head coach Don Hanson calls them preliminary matches.

Hockey team wraps up season in second place in the GPCHA

Like most teams this past weekend, the South Dakota State’s hockey club geared up to play their tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. After two days of tackling, skating and shooting, the Jacks walked away with a second place finish in the Great Plains Collegiate Hockey Association Tournament, Feb.

Six wrestlers place in tourney

Six South Dakota State University wrestlers placed at the North Central Conference Division II Championships held in Sioux Falls Sunday, Feb. 24. The Jacks included two individual champions Jeremy Roe and Tyler Jones. SDSU’s Aaron Veskrna and Todd Paszek made it to the championship round but finished in second place.

In our humble opinion…

Bad: It’s official: the Collegian has run out of people to infuriate. Well, there’s always the Medieval Society (freaks) or the Block and Bridle Club (hicks) … Good: Congratulations to the Pride of the Dakota’s Marching Band on next year’s opportunity to play at the Rose Bowl.

Music Review

This week the need has arisen to address the final recording of one of pop music’s innovators, although his group’s primary influence came as addition by subtraction. Or just by raising a middle finger to Deep Purple and Boston. Either way, the Ramones injected more life into the music world by stripping down each song into energetic three-chord bursts than nearly any group could have in 1975.

How will the history books handle Sept. 11?

One of the more interesting meetings after the Sept. 11 attack involved Karl Rove, George Bush’s senior adviser and most of the major Hollywood studio chiefs and producers. In it, Rove suggested that Hollywood needed to sign up for the duration of the war against terror.

Trip to Pine Ridge provides insight

I just got back from a short trip to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. It was the first time I had the opportunity to spend time with the Lakota in a different setting: where they live. There are approximately 25,000 to 30,000 Lakota living on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Our View

Kudos to the 500 or so students and faculty members who showed up to the Daschle/Johnson press conference. That will teach politicians to plan for only a few hundred the next time they decide to put in an appearance on this campus. Now if we could only get about 10 times that number to vote in elections, be they SA or otherwise, that would be a true miracle.

Swimmers finish season strong

Last weekend, the South Dakota State University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished their season at the North Central Conference championship meet in Grand Forks, N.D.

Spring Break Anyone?

Outback Jacks and UPC are both sponsoring spring break trips this year to attract students with low prices and a fun experience outdoors. Outback Jacks is sponsoring the trip to Colorado while UPC is planning the trip to the Black Hills. Jaime Haier is the Outback Jack coordinator for the trip to Colorado and is very excited about what the trip entails.
