College of Gen. Studies adjusts to new role
In October of 2001, the College of General Registration adopted its new name, the College of General Studies and Outreach Programs The change was brought about for several reasons. Gail Tidemann, Dean of the College of General Studies and Outreach Programs, said that the addition of the Outreach Programs also included a broader scope of abilities that the college now has.
Economics prof. retires
Nichole Grififth C&C Editor Long time SDSU Economics professor Howard “Rocky” Gilbert retired in December, after nearly 35 years of teaching. Gilbert said he went into teaching because he always enjoyed being a student and liked sharing his knowledge with others.
Nursing: The stress that blesses
In 1937, SDSU graduated its first class of nursing students. Today, despite challenges that nurses face in the workplace and an overall shortage, the SDSU nursing program is still going strong. The program was recently re-accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education through 2011.
Campus challenged to diversify
For the past few years SDSU has led a march for anyone who wants to get involved. This marks the third annual march, which started at Tompkins Alumni Center at noon and ended at the Union on Jan. 22. That’s when the Rev. Allan Schoonover addressed the audience.
Brown Bag Lectures feature local interests, talents
The 14th Annual Brown Bag Lectures will begin at 12:05 p.m. on Jan. 31 in Rotunda F. The first lecture in the series will be “Notes of a Traveler on Highway 14″ presented by SDSU history professor John Miller. Miller’s book, Looking for History on Highway 14, was first published in 1993.
Native American Club provides opportunities, shares culture
Travelling to local powwows, attending various conferences and organizing a powwow on campus involving over 200 dancers are among just a few of the activities that the SDSU Native American Club offers. The club, co-advised by Lenora Hudson and Valerian Three Irons, promotes a sharing of cultures for Native American students and the community.
Freshman scholarship to jack up enrollment
Most students applying for scholarships know the way it works. An impressive ACT score can carry an application to the front lines. But students with decent ACT scores fail to receive much financial assistance. In order to offer scholarships to the underserved population of the 24 to 26 point ACT score, SDSU has unveiled its new Jackrabbit Guarantee.
Recruits ignite SDSU with new talent
The South Dakota State University athletic programs have been busy recruiting top high school talent to help carry on the Jackrabbits’ winning traditions. Football The official signing date for football is Feb. 6, but head coach John Stiegelmeier has already gotten verbal commitments from eight players.
Women share conference lead after weekend win
Off on a rocky road trip last weekend, the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team experienced the highs and lows that will be a part of most long seasons. At Omaha on Friday, the Jacks were upset by the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks, in overtime, 80-77.
Track, field teams walk away with top finishes at MSU
The South Dakota State University track team had an encouraging weekend at the MSU Open in Mankato, coming away with seven first-place finishes, and 16 other finishers placing in the top three. “The team as a whole has a little way to go yet due to a heavy training week and some Christmas inactivity,” said graduate assistant Nick Burrow.
