We thought he’d live forever’

The last time I saw Dr. Hilton M. Briggs was Friday, Nov. 16. I wish we had stopped to talk, but we just said hello and passed each other by like we’d done so many mornings before. It was 6 a.m. and Dr. Briggs, 88, was headed for the track above Frost Arena.

Four stars: ‘Apes’ improves, ‘Heart’ twines lives, humor

“Planet of the Apes” Mastermind director Tim Burton returns to a planet upside-down from ours in his newest sci-fi flick, “Planet of the Apes.” On this strangely familiar world, apes rule over the land and humans are the animals, caged and sold into slavery by the apes.

Columnist complains about complainers

Everyone has a couple annoying habits that drive people crazy (numerous people have significantly more). Some folks scrape their teeth on their fork, others smack their chewing gum, and many are unremitting pen clickers. After painstaking research I have determined the most aggravating pet peeves known to man.

Environmental ethics: moving from extrinsic to intrinsic

We recently completed our section on environmental ethics in Bio/Phil 383 – Bioethics. Because our interaction was so much fun and so interesting, I’d like to share some of our themes, concepts, and discussion with you. Now that winter and holiday seasons are upon us, chances are you will be doing a little more driving, and now is the time to have your car tuned up before the full force of a South Dakota winter hits. A mechanic should check the following on your car during a winter tune-up :battery, antifreeze, wipers, ignition system, thermostat, lights and hazard lights, exhaust system, heater, brakes defroster and oil level.

Former economist cherishes memories

The cheerful, bright-eyed woman at Greenleaf Assisted Living Center looks like she has stories to tell. Her friendly smile and sparkling eyes aid her in relaying the story of her 84 years. Mary Frances Lyle, a retired home economist who served SDSU for years, has dedicated most of her life to working with the Cooperative Extension Service.

Pink’s pop album packs a punch, embarrassed columist relieved

Perhaps I could explain my choice for a record this week in terms of a steadfast devotion to some pretentious sort of populist ethic, whereby a critic must routinely cleanse his/herself to appease “the little people” by shedding their pompous skin and reviewing pop on pop’s terms.

Love o’meter: What does it take for a great date?

The definition of a “perfect date” varies greatly from person to person. In fact, there may be as many creative ideas for dates as there are proverbial fish in the sea. The general consensus of SDSU students interviewed on the subject was that communication is important, money is usually an object and its not necessarily the “where” but the “who” that matters while planning night out.
